19th NCARC Conference Report

A Glimpse of what it was like to attend the conference

For some of us this was our first conference. Unfortunately, it may also be our last as currently no chapter has volunteered to host the next North and Central American Regional Conference.

Iron ikebana

The Iron Ikebana demonstration featured 16 participants divided into four panels of four demonstrators each. Each panel included a representative from the Ikenobo, Ichiyo, Sogetsu, and Ohara schools. The demonstrators were given a surprise set of materials and ten minutes to simultaneously create their arrangements. This unexpected challenge added a layer of excitement and skill to the competition. Our own Jeanne Houlton was one of the demonstrators. The photos includes arrangements done by each school in the panel that included Jeanne.

Demonstrations

To our disappointment, except for the Ikenobo arrangements, all the demonstrators arrangements where dismantled within about 15 minutes after the completion of the demonstrations. It was a challenge to get any good photos. The size of some of the branches for the large floor pieces made us wonder how in the world they got the materials to the hotel and from where they were able to get such large pieces! That information would be very interesting to know. Word had it that some of the materials came from New York and Boston.
